Edwin Europe presents ‘Surplus’, a capsule collection available in five different styles, creating a fifteen piece programme with minimalism and functionality at the core of its design principles.
The ‘Surplus’ Collection utilises a palette of hand picked, premium fabrics including japanese selvage denim, organic denim, technical fine ripstop and a generous offering of coloured twill. The use of ‘dead-stock’ fabric means that each piece is produced in very limited numbers.

The Art of Sign Painting with Nicolai Sclater Apr 21, 2013
“UK based artist Nicolai Sclater may be coined a sign painter by trade, but he takes his art further than the customary two-dimensional canvases. Employing sleek typography fonts that ode with retro aesthetics, Sclater, otherwise known as the Ornamental Conifer, toys with various mediums — denim jackets, vintage automotive and garden equipment — as anomalous backdrops to his work.”
We have recently started a project with Tom Appleton, he works with lettercarving, stonemasonry & chutzpah. A couple of weeks back he came into the London Store with an amazing pair of OOOOOLD Sens that he’s been wearing (see below).
We have now given him a pair of ED-39 Red Selvage Unwashed, and we are going to monitor them over the next year to see how they develop.
About: Passionate about letterforms and ephemera, excited by giving a permanence to pop. A happy collision, often resulting in hand-carved wall pieces in native stones.
A trained craftsman, using heritage skills and tools that haven’t changed since Roman times to document, comment and celebrate modern life. Yeoman Mason of the Worshipful Company of Masons since 2009. And no, that’s not about handshakes and trouser legs, it’s about continuing the skills of hand-crafted stonemasonry that are centuries old.
Only working with hand tools, from design to finishing details. All work is drawn with a pencil. Letters are spaced by eye. Carving is with mallet and chisel.
The Spring / Summer collection offers a selection of indigo classics in a dot cotton denim. This lightweight denim has Dobby dots woven into the fabric and is specially developed for Edwin by Kuroki in Japan.
When Nas was in London a couple of weeks back to perform at the O2, he picked up a few pieces from the Spring / Summer collection.
Good to see him putting them to good use in Berlin a couple of days later…

Fred Mortagne released an online version of his ‘Hand in Hand’ book last week, documenting the Cliché skate team in Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv and the Dead Sea.
